The following Code of Conduct applies to everyone present at the Kidlitosphere Conference or any KidLitCon-associated event or activity.
KidLitCon prohibits discrimination or harassment based on race, age, sex, gender, gender identity, national origin, ancestry, physical ability, medical condition, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status, marital/domestic partnership status, citizenship, or any marginalized status not already specified.
We aim to foster an environment of mutual respect at all KidLitCon events. All participants at KidLitCon are expected to treat other attendees, guests, speakers, authors, staff, and the general public with mutual respect. Physical and verbal harassment and sexual assault will not be tolerated. Speakers are asked to frame discussions as openly and inclusively as possible and to be aware of how language or images may be perceived by others. Intentionally disrupting, derailing, or discrediting any speeches or panel discussions will not be tolerated.
Some discussions may create a high degree of feeling – but in all of our conversations, the use of deliberate intimidation, physical aggression, shouting, swearing, public shaming, or other antisocial or aggressive behavior will absolutely not be tolerated. KidLitCon is a safe space for the exploration of ideas – please do your part to keep this KidLitCon a positive and amazing experience for everyone.
It is expected that participants may need to walk away and allow for space and reflection. Please respect fellow participants who have the need and know that you too may require this care.
In-depth examination of children’s and young adult literature may at times necessitate discussions of difficult topics, including, but not limited to: violence, sexual activity, rape, alcohol or drug abuse, child abuse, racism, or bullying. Such topics do not of themselves constitute harassment if they are handled in an appropriately professional manner. Attendees who find any such discussion uncomfortable or triggering are encouraged to leave the session.
Sexual harassment prohibited by this policy includes, but is not limited to: (1) unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other physical, verbal or written conduct of a sexual nature, and (2) creating an intimidating, hostile, or sexually offensive environment by severe or pervasive conduct.
This policy forbids harassment based on gender or gender identity regardless of whether the offensive conduct is sexual in nature. Any unwelcome conduct based on gender is also forbidden regardless of whether the individual engaged in harassment and the individual being harassed are of the same or are of different genders.
This policy forbids harassment regardless of whether it rises to the level of a legal violation. Examples of gender-based harassment forbidden by this policy include:(1) offensive sex-oriented verbal kidding, teasing or jokes, (2) repeated unwanted sexual flirtations, advances, or propositions, (3) verbal abuse of a sexual nature, (4) graphic or degrading comments about an individual’s appearance or sexual activity, (5) offensive visual conduct, including leering, making sexual gestures, the display of offensive sexually suggestive objects or pictures, cartoons or posters, (6) unwelcome pressure for sexual activity, (7) offensively suggestive or obscene letters, notes or invitations, (8) offensive physical contact such as patting, grabbing, pinching, or brushing against another’s body, and (9) sexual favoritism.

This Policy prohibits retaliation against any KidLitCon attendee for reporting harassment, intimidation or discrimination and for participating in an investigation relating to a complaint. The sanctions for Retaliation are the same sanctions available to address any other violation of this Policy.
Sanctions for Violation of Policy
When it has been determined that a violation of this Policy has occurred, the KidLitCon staff will determine, in their sole discretion, the appropriate sanction. Disciplinary measures may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- tell the harasser to leave the conference with no money back;
- tell the harasser to have no further interaction with the victim while at KidLitCon;
- inform the harasser that they will never be allowed at KidLitCon again
KidLitCon staff will make every reasonable effort to conduct all investigations into allegations of harassment, intimidation, or discrimination in a manner that will protect the confidentiality of all parties.
Notwithstanding the above, confidentiality is not absolute, and those with a legitimate business reason to know and to be informed of the allegations will be so informed. Parties to the complaint should treat the matter under investigation with discretion and respect for the reputation of all parties involved.
